A nonprofit claims it can prevent veterans from committing suicide with one simple trick: a bus.
In the first three months of 2024, the U.S. Department of Defense reported 139 military deaths by suicide, according to WRAL, a local news outlet that reported on the non-profit’s bus this week.
HBOT 4 Heroes is a nonprofit that says it helps veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder by giving them access to hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy, or HBOT.
“We are talking about veterans that came back from the war,” said Edward Degiralamo of HBOT 4 Heroes. “These war fighters were in dark bedrooms for years. Now we’re getting them completely cured.”
According to WRAL, after 40 treatments, studies show the treatments can lead to reduction in suicide, improved sleep, less depression, and lower anxiety.
“They essentially are breathing pure oxygen while they go under pressure,” Degiralamo said.
“We are finding cure – as opposed to coping,” he added. “Cure is ultimately the goal.”
The program has about 700 veterans on the waiting list for the free service.
If you are a veteran and think the treatments might cure you, you can add yourself to the list at hbot4heroes.org.
