US Marines attacked while visiting a port in Turkey

Update: The US Navy’s Sixth Fleet confirmed the service members who were attacked in Turkey are Marines.

September 2 – The U.S. embassy has confirmed two US service members were attacked in western Turkey and 15 people have been detained in connection to it.

According to Turkish officials, those responsible for the attack are part of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB), a youth branch of the nationalist opposition Vatan Party, Reuters reports.

Reuters claims the two service members were “U.S. soldiers dressed in civilian clothes” but the US Embassy stated the service members were assigned to the USS Wasp, so they are more likely to be Sailors or Marines.

The amphibious assault ship was conducting a port visit at the coastal town of Izmir this week.

(Sept. 1, 2024) The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), transits into Izmir, Türkiye, Sept. 1, 2024, for a scheduled port visit.
