Video of N. Korean soldier looking at spicy content might not be what everyone is saying it is

The news of North Korean troops serving alongside Russian troops in Ukraine quickly took a turn when a video of one N. Korean soldier surfaced.

News publications, such as Newsweek ran headlines such as “Video Seems to Show North Korean Soldier Watching Raunchy Videos in Russia,” and other news outlets were quick to cite “sources” to say that many of the N. Korean soldiers have become addicted to adult content after having unrestricted access to the internet for the first time.

Not a single one of the publications produced any content or videos to provide proof of these claims.

It seems they played the game of “Telephone,” a popular children’s game in which a message is whispered from person to person rather than reporting facts.

The only video that has surfaced on social media shows an unidentified soldier swiping up on short videos of clothed women dancing on social media.

While it is likely the N. Koreans have come across adult content during their first use of an unrestricted internet connection, it appears the source for this story was an unnamed person who spoke with Gideon Rachman, the chief foreign affairs commentator for The Financial Times.

“A usually reliable source tells me that the North Korean soldiers who have deployed to Russia have never had unfettered access to the internet before,” he wrote on Twitter. “As a result, they are gorging on pornography.”

The video of the soldier swiping through video clips on a social media platform has not been confirmed to have been recorded in Russia or Ukraine and there are things within the video that could prove it was not.

The Satly Soldier was able to track down the picture hanging on the wall of his bunk from the December 2015 edition of GQ Korea.

The picture is of IU (아이유), a 31-year-old South Korean singer-songwriter and actress who was in her early 20s at the time the picture was taken.

If the video is what many claim it is, it is not known how a North Korean would have obtained an almost decade-old poster to hang on the wall next to his bunk.
