The US Army has officially charged the soldier who has been in custody in connection to the murder of an Army sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood.
Specialist Wooster Rancy, 21, has been charged with murdering 23-year-old Sgt. Sarah Roque, according to a news release from Fort Leonard Wood on Thursday.
Both soldiers served in the 5th Engineer Battalion but it is unclear if Roque was in Wooster’s chain of command.
Rancy is accused of murdering Roque on October 20th and disposing of her body in a dumpster adjacent to a single soldiers barracks at Fort Leonard Wood.
He also faces an obstructing justice charge and was being held in pretrial confinement awaiting a preliminary hearing, according to the release.
According to his social media, he is from Miami, Florida.
The Army’s CID worked closely with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to investigate Roque’s murder.
“I want to acknowledge the professional leadership of the unit, the Fort Leonard Wood team and the Army Criminal Investigation Division, as well as everyone who has worked tirelessly to respond quickly and appropriately to this tragedy,” Major General Beck said last week.
“This is a tragedy. This is something that we never want to happen. We never want for the family to have to endure the unit to have to endure.”
Sgt. Roque was a bridge crewmember, serving as a Mine Dog Handler with the K9 Detachment, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Engineer Battalion.
She enlisted in 2020 and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood.
Her awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
