The news of the most recent hurricane to form in the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Militon has taken dominance over news about the people in North Carolina who have been affected by last month’s Hurricane Helene.
On social media, many are discussing the use of FEMA funding to aid migrants coming into the United States in 2022, the US funding for two foreign wars overseas, and the limited funding now being provided to those affected by Hurricane Helene.
On Monday, a Sheriff on the ground in Chimney Rock, North Carolina came forward to state his frustration with the federal government’s lack of assistance for their county’s residents.
Spartanburg County Sherrif Chuck Wright told journalist Sarah Carter at the scene in North Carolina the federal government told his residents to use their phones or computers to apply for the $750 promised to them.
“Do you not see what the devastation is? They don’t have a phone or computer,” he said.
“If you going to to be doing the things you’ve been saying you’re going to be doing… let the good men and women around the mountain area and the foothills take care of our own because you are nothing more than a boat anchor,” he added.
Sherrif Wright said he was going to tell Sarah something about the White House’s handling of the situation but doesn’t like to curse.
Sherrif Wright said they welcome outsiders who want to help but said they must make contact with an organization assisting in the relief efforts first because they need to be vetted.
He alluded to looting already occurring in the area and said it would not be tolerated.
Rutherfordton County Sheriff Aaron Ellenburg also took the opportunity to speak, stating Chimney Rock suffered the most damage of anywhere in his county.
