Rapper is part of National Guard unit that deployed to aid disaster relief

A young rapper who serves in the Georgia National Guard seems to have avoided being called up to service in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread destruction across her state.

Army National Guard Specialist Mciver is an Atlanta-based rapper who goes by the name of “Marla Mac.”

The self-described “melodic artist” released her song “Step” with a music video in July of last year.

She is assigned to the Georgia National Guard’s 78th Troop Command, which consists of the 110th Combat Service Support Battalion, 122nd Theater Support Detachment, 560th Battlefield Coordination Detachment, and 221st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Battalion.

The 116th United States Army Band also falls under the command and was assigned to provide disaster aid this week.

According to the 78th Troop Command, they were on the ground in the City of Soperton handing out meals and water bottles to those affected by Hurricane Helene.

The Coomand’s headquarters element was sent to the City of Swainsboro and Emanuel County to provide aid.

Before the hurricane’s landfall, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp authorized the activation of up to 500 Georgia National Guardsmen to support the state’s response efforts.

On September 26, the Georgia National Guard’s 124th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment released the following statement:

“The Georgia National Guard will operate under the direction of the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency and state and local responders. Trained and equipped to clear debris, transport relief supplies, and provide additional support in disaster recovery operations, the Georgia National Guard is here to help. Due to concerns for employee safety, essential employees only will report to duty on Friday, September 27, 2024.”

The Salty Soldier has been requesting information from the Georgia National Guard since September 24th regarding another story but has not been able to receive answers because of Hurricane Helene.

After being told by Lt. Colonel Pamela Stauffer, from the Georgia National Guard’s public affairs, they were “in Hurricane response prep,” on September 25th, The Salty Soldier has not been able to reach her.

The Salty Soldier reached out to the 78th Troop Command to see if any other units, besides the Command’s headquarters element and the 116th United States Army Band have been deployed to provide aid.

It is not known which part of the 78th Troop Command Specialist Mciver serves in but based on her recent posts on social media, she does not appear to be activated.
