Over the weekend, active-duty soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division assisted in aiding the hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina.
On Sunday, Active duty soldiers from the 82nd Airborne and the 20th Engineer Brigade from Fort Liberty, North Carolina, transported three 5-ton MTVs worth of food and water to the French Broad Fire and Rescue station.
The Fire and Rescue Station is roughly 13 miles northwest of Asheville, NC.
The commodities brought by the soldiers will be distributed to communities in and around the Town of Alexander, NC that were impacted by Hurricane Helene.
“We are here to provide aid and support,” said Cpt. Trevor Owens, Charlie Company, 189th DSSB 82nd Airborne, “we want to let western North Carolina know that they have been heard by the Nation; and we answered the call.”
Soldiers from the 2-502, 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) also headed to North Carolina on Sunday.
They packed up their Infantry Squad Vehicles on the morning of October 6th and headed to North Carolina to help provide aid to the people affected by Hurricane Helene.
According to the Army, the 101st has deployed two battalions from 2MBCT and elements of the 101st Division Support Brigade and 101 Combat Aviation Brigade to help provide aid and support the local communities and FEMA efforts.
On Saturday, the US Army Corps of Engineers provided an assessment of the damage done by Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina.
Mark Cardwell, debris subject matter expert provided an update on the debris response to areas affected in the area.
Asheville has been a controversial area for aid efforts in North Carolina.
An Air Force special operations veteran, who currently serves in the Florida State Guard, accused the US government of failing to properly provide assets to recover and provide aid to people in the area.
“I am just so mad at the lack of Government support and I need people to hear how desperate this situation is,” Jonathan Howard wrote last week.
“It’s like our Government wants these people to die,” he said in a video.
“They’re so incompetent, disorganized, and dishonest it’s disgusting.”
