At least three hundred people have been reportedly injured during what is believed to be a coordinated attack in Lebonan.
Hackers reportedly hacked the devices, believed to be hand-held pagers, and caused their batteries to explode.
According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur, a German news agency, the detonations occurred in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, as well as in the south of the country.
Hezbollah is a key ally of the Islamic Republic of Iran and some are speculating the attack was related to the war in Gaza.
According to the latest report from Al Jazeera, Navvar Saban, a security and conflict analyst at Omran Center for Strategic Studies, said the incident was a large-scale cyber-attack that targeted Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon and even members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria.
“People think that pagers are old, but there is an advanced model produced that Hezbollah received recently and started using in Syria and Lebanon, along with the Revolutionary Guard,” he said.
“It’s thousands of assassination attempts at the same time that happened in different geographical areas. The psychological impact is huge, it’s going to affect Hezbollah,” he added.
Numerous videos, allegedly showing the pager devices exploding, have been circulating on X (formerly Twitter).
