Airman assigned to Special Operations Wing arrested on sexual assault charges linked to incident before enlistment

An Airman assigned to one of the Air Force’s elite special operations units is now facing felony sexual assault charges in Texas for alleged crimes prosecutors say occurred years before he ever put on the uniform.

Senior Airman Joshua Okelberry, currently assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, was indicted by a Denton County grand jury on two counts of sexual assault tied to an incident dating back to August 1, 2021.

In a statement to The Salty Soldier, the Air Force confirmed Okelberry is currently serving:

“Joshua Okelberry is a Senior Airman assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing. The Air Force is aware of the charges brought against him and we are cooperating with Texas and New Mexico authorities to ensure a judicious investigation.”

The charges were brought by indictment in November 2025, meaning the case was presented directly to a grand jury rather than filed through a lower court first—a path typically reserved for more serious or fully developed investigations.

According to the indictment, prosecutors allege Okelberry committed two separate acts of sexual assault against the same victim during the 2021 incident.

One count alleges inappropriate contact while the victim was unconscious. A second count alleges a separate act of sexual assault during the same incident.

In both instances, the indictment states the victim was unable to consent—described as unconscious, physically unable to resist, or unaware the assault was occurring.

The indictment itself does not detail how the allegations were brought forward or what evidence led investigators in Little Elm, Texas, to pursue charges in the case.

The Salty Soldier has requested the probable cause affidavit and related warrant documents, which are currently under review by local officials prior to release. Those records are expected to provide additional context regarding the timeline of the investigation and the evidence supporting the charges.

After the indictment was handed down, a capias warrant was issued for Okelberry’s arrest. He was taken into custody on February 6, 2026, and booked into the Denton County Jail before being released the same day on a $50,000 bond.

The timeline presents a gap of several years. The alleged offense occurred in 2021, while the indictment was not returned until late 2025. By the time of his arrest in 2026, Okelberry was already serving as an Airman assigned to a special operations wing—one of the Air Force’s most operationally demanding communities.

As with all criminal cases, Okelberry is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Air Force emphasized that the case remains under civilian jurisdiction:

“The Air Force considers sexual assault a criminal offense, and perpetrators are subject to investigation and prosecution under military law. The allegations being investigated precede Senior Airman Okelberry’s entry into the service and are being investigated by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office who has jurisdiction.”

The statement makes clear the alleged conduct predates Okelberry’s military service and that the case remains in civilian hands, with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation.

Still, the situation places a currently serving Airman—assigned to a unit under Air Force Special Operations Command—at the center of a serious felony prosecution involving serious allegations.

The case is now pending in the 158th Judicial District Court in Denton County, Texas. A court setting is scheduled for May 1, 2026, as the legal process moves forward.

But the facts already on record—an indictment, an arrest, and formal allegations—ensure this case will draw continued attention both inside and outside the military community.
