Soldier’s wife killed him in their on-base home where their children also lived

A federal jury has convicted Margaret E. Shafe, 31, of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of her husband, U.S. Army soldier Greg Shafe, at their home on Fort Riley, Kansas. The tragic incident occurred in February 2024, and after a thorough investigation, the court found Margaret Shafe guilty of murdering her husband, who was stationed at the military installation.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Greg Shafe suffered a gunshot wound to the head on February 19, 2024. He was pronounced dead the following day. The couple had been living in on-base housing with their daughter and Margaret’s stepdaughter since Greg’s assignment to Fort Riley. The motive for the crime still remains unclear.

Greg and Margaret Shafe

Greg Shafe was born on April 18, 1988, in Tucson, Arizona. He moved frequently during his childhood, attending schools in Nebraska, Iowa, and Arizona before settling in Florida, where he graduated from Bishop John Snyder High School in 2006. Greg was an outstanding athlete, excelling in baseball and football, earning MVP honors in both sports during his high school years.

Following high school, Greg attended Dana University in Nebraska on a sports scholarship, but due to illness and injury, he withdrew and later relocated to Marana, Arizona. In May 2011, he enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard and underwent training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Fort Gordon, Georgia, specializing as a computer specialist. After completing his military training, he returned to Arizona and later pursued a career as a correctional officer with the State of Arizona.

In 2015, Greg transitioned to higher education, attending Arizona State University before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism in May 2021. During his time at UNL, he was active in intramural flag football, earning All-American honors and leading his teams to multiple championships, including Big Ten Regional Championships and Nationals in Florida.

While working as an armed security officer at General Dynamics, Greg met Margaret Sebek, his future wife. The couple married in July 2022 in Girard, Kansas, and later moved to Fort Riley, where Greg was stationed. He had planned to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was originally slated to deploy to Poland before choosing to stay with his wife during a complicated pregnancy.

Margaret Shafe now faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. A federal district court judge will determine her sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and the Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Walton and Lindsey Debenham, along with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Graham, are prosecuting the case.
