A U.S. Army officer assigned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, tragically lost his life in an accident involving a Metro train.
2nd Lt. Dominic Karl Von Frybarger was killed on January 25 after being struck by a Metro train.
“As many of you know, our son Dominic was recently stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital just a couple of months ago,” his father shared online.

“Tragically, on Saturday night, Dominic was involved in an accident and was struck by a Metro train while on foot. We were informed by the Army Chaplains of Dominic’s passing yesterday and do not yet have further details.”
According to ABC7, a pedestrian trespassing in a tunnel was struck and killed by a Metro train in North Bethesda on the same night as Frybarger’s accident.
While authorities have not officially confirmed the identity, the location of the incident was just one stop away from Walter Reed along the Metro Rail Red Line.
A Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson reported that the victim was found on the tracks between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and North Bethesda Metro stations with fatal injuries.
Passengers aboard the train were evacuated onto another train following the incident.
2nd Lt. Frybarger served as a registered nurse at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Before commissioning as a U.S. Army officer, he participated in the ROTC program at Wright State University.
His obituary highlights his dedication to service and community: “Born on February 18, 2002, in West Jefferson, Ohio, Dominic was a 2020 graduate of West Jefferson High School. He was known for his deep commitment to family, community, and service, always placing others before himself. His kind heart, unwavering dedication, and selfless nature touched the lives of many.”
Notably, just a week before Frybarger’s death, another person was struck and killed by a train outside the same station.
