Two people have been indicted, including the victim’s husband, in the 2024 murder of a Fort Campbell soldier who was found stabbed to death in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The Clarksville Police Department announced Saturday the Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted 35-year-old Sofia Rodas and Aguilar’s husband, 40-year-old Reynaldo Salinas Cruz.
Rodas was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, while Cruz was charged with tampering with evidence.
On May 18, 2024, 23-year-old Fort Campbell Private First Class Katia Duenas-Aguilar was found deceased inside her off-base apartment in The Centre apartment complex in Clarksville.
An autopsy report revealed Duenas-Aguilar was found with 68 sharp force injuries on her body, predominantly in the neck. Her official cause of death was sharp force injuries to the neck, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
According to The Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s Office, Duenas-Aguilar had 55 stab wounds and 13 incised wounds. Of those, 39 were on the right side of her neck, eight on the left, with others found on her upper back, shoulders, and scalp.
A toxicology report was also conducted and it concluded there was ethanol and Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid in her system and a blood alcohol level of 0.161—well above the legal driving limit of 0.08
Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, aka “GHB” has been used in drug-facilitated sexual assaults due to its rapid sedative effects and memory impairment.
The unspecified findings against Rodas and Cruz were brought to the Grand Jury in December 2024 by the CPD and the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
At the time of the indictment, Rodas and Cruz were in federal custody on charges unrelated to Aguilar’s murder, according to the CPD. The two were extradited Friday to Clarksville, where they were served with indictments at the Montgomery County Jail.
Duenas-Aguilar was a 23-year-old from Mesquite, Texas.
She joined the army as an information technology specialist in 2018, according to the Air Assault’s public affairs office.
Duenas-Aguilar completed advanced individual training at Fort Eisenhower in Georgia before reporting to Fort Campbell in 2019.
Authorities said the case remains an open and active investigation as the suspects await prosecution.
