Army recruiting officer sentenced to confinement

An Army officer assigned to the US Army recruiting command has been sentenced to confinement and received an official letter of reprimand following his conviction during a court-martial.

According to Army documents, Army Captain Mawil Gomez-Valerio was convicted for the wrongful use of cocaine.

While the Army redacted the documents to obscure his current assignment, media distributed by Army Public Affairs show that he took command of the San Juan Recruiting Company in Puerto Rico in 2018.

The Army reported that Gomez-Valerio was charged with wrongfully using cocaine sometime between late February and early March 2023 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

This period coincides with Carnaval Mabó, an annual celebration in Guaynabo honoring King Mabó. The festival features a parade of floats, music, local artisans, and the Festival de la Patita Guisá (Pig’s Feet Stew), concluding with the traditional Burial of the Sardine. However, it remains unclear whether Gomez-Valerio attended these events when the cocaine use occurred.

On August 1, 2023, at a general court-martial convened at Fort Knox, Kentucky, CPT Mawil Gomez-Valerio was convicted by a military judge, pursuant to his plea, of one specification of wrongful use of a controlled substance in violation of Article 112a of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

The military judge sentenced him to five days of confinement and issued a reprimand.

The information regarding his conviction and sentencing was made public on January 15, 2024.
