Pfc. McCallaster Foley, a 20-year-old Army infantryman in advanced individual training (AIT), died on January 8, 2025, following a “non-training-related” incident, according to the Army.
Base officials reported that Foley was off duty and near the company area when the incident occurred after dinner. The exact circumstances remain under investigation.
Drill sergeants at the scene provided immediate medical aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Foley was transported to Martin Army Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Army officials have not released additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Foley, a native of Alden, Iowa, enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2024 under a four-year contract. His military career began at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Johnston, Iowa, and he started his training as an infantryman in August 2024. Family members and Army officials noted his enthusiasm and pride in serving his country.
Born on February 24, 2004, Foley graduated from Iowa Falls-Alden High School in 2022 and attended Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) before enlisting. His family described him as having a lifelong dream of military service, which he pursued with determination and passion.
In his Obituary, Foley’s family and friends recalled his charismatic personality and adventurous spirit. Known for his kindness, humor, and selflessness, Foley brought joy to those around him. He was deeply loved by his family, who remembered his love of scuba diving, weightlifting, snowboarding, constructing zip lines, helping on the family farm, and riding his motorcycle.

Foley’s funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. Burial will follow at Alden Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family for later disbursement. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
