New details reveal soldier tried to save man’s life before he was arrested

The police report related to the arrest of a Fort Bliss soldier following a deadly crash in El Paso has been released.

Specialist Brandon Victor Shepherd, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon in the early morning hours of December 13.

According to the report, Shepherd called 911 after being involved in a collision with a motorcycle near his apartment complex.

Shepherd reportedly told police officers he did not see the motorcycle as he turned onto Castellano Drive. He said he attempted to maneuver his truck, but by the time he noticed the motorcycle, it was too late to avoid a crash.

The impact caused the motorcyclist to be ejected from the bike and led to Shepherd’s truck colliding with the Angry Owl restaurant.

El Paso Police indicated that the crash occurred because one of the drivers ran a red light, though they have not yet determined which party was at fault.

Shepherd informed officers that he called 911 and was instructed by the dispatcher to perform CPR on the motorcyclist along with his two passengers. Despite their efforts, the motorcyclist, identified as 38-year-old Kyle Leonard Calverly, succumbed to his injuries.

During the investigation, officers discovered that the 2007 black Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle involved in the crash had been reported stolen prior to the incident.

The police report noted that Shepherd displayed signs of intoxication, including glossy eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol. When questioned, Shepherd admitted to consuming “four Michelob Ultra tall boys” but claimed he was the designated driver, returning his friends from a bar.

Field sobriety tests and subsequent testing at the El Paso Police Department’s Central Regional Command confirmed that Shepherd’s blood alcohol levels exceeded the legal limit.

During a search of Shepherd’s vehicle, officers allegedly discovered a 9mm handgun in a fanny pack located on the truck’s center console floorboard.

Shepherd was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, with bonds totaling $12,500.
