A 20-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Cavazos has died after fleeing from police in Killeen early on the morning of November 17.
According to the Killeen Police Department, officers responded to a call about a disturbance involving weapons at the parking lot shared by BluPrint Lounge and Spadez Club around 5:00 a.m. When officers arrived, they found that the BluPrint Lounge was closed, and the altercation had taken place in the parking lot outside the venue.
As police investigated, one of the suspects fled the scene in a 2017 red Chevrolet Camaro, prompting officers to pursue the vehicle. Shortly after, police discovered the Camaro crashed in the 100 block of South Twin Creek Drive, after it left the roadway during the chase.
According to a preliminary investigation, the vehicle struck a utility pole, then jumped over railroad tracks before coming to a stop. The driver, later identified as the soldier, was pronounced dead at the scene around 5:30 a.m.
The soldier’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Investigation Ongoing
The Killeen Police Department has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the events leading up to the police pursuit. It remains unclear whether the soldier was directly involved in the initial altercation or if he was simply a suspect.
