Man arrested for killing his brother after having an affair with his wife while he was deployed

A man who has been on the run from murder charges for two years was finally caught after posing as a homeless veteran in Iowa.

Kyle Andrew Coolack, 39, was wanted for allegedly shooting and killing his brother, Brad Henry Coolack at an apartment in Houston in 2022.

After two years on the run, Kyle Coolack was found in Calhoun County, Iowa after being kicked out of a home.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call Saturday from a man who said he had just kicked out a man who admitted to being on the run for killing his brother.

The man, identified as Eddi Mason says he picked up Coolack off the side of road where he was holding a “Veteran needing work sign,” according to KEYC.

Mason said he gave Coolack work, housing, and food over the past week.

He said they even had plans to watch football Sunday before he found out he was a suspected murderer.

“I got woke up this morning by a message saying I need to get my roommate out of the house, he was a murderer on the run,” he said.

When Mason confronted Coolack, he admitted his true identity and Mason asked him to leave before reporting him to the police.

A Calhoun County deputy located Coolack outside of the town of Pomeroy walking south along a highway, according to Click2Houston.

When he was detained and questioned, he initially gave deputies a false name but eventually gave them his real name.

Deputies were able to find the warrant for his arrest and took him to Carroll County Jail to await extradition back to Houston.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, obtained by Law and Crime, on the day of the shooting, Kyle Coolack, identified himself as “Coolack” when he called 911 using his brother’s phone to say another man “was shot in the leg” and had died.

When dispatchers asked him how the shooting occurred, he allegedly responded that he “doesn’t know what f—— happened.”

He said he arrived at the apartment and found him shot and then hung up. He refused to answer all the returning calls from police officers.

When officers interviewed a neighbor, she said she heard two men arguing just before the shooting.

She allegedly heard one of them say, “You slept with my wife!” during the argument.

Brad’s ex-wife confirmed to detectives she had an “extramarital affair” with his brother, Kyle, while Brad was deployed overseas while serving in the Army.

The brother’s mother told detectives Kyle Coolack pistol-whipped Brad Coolack a few months before the alleged murder.

She also said Kyle would often stay in his brother’s apartment.
