Video shows Military Police opening fire during deadly Fort Hood shooting; victims identified as investigation continues

FORT HOOD, Texas — Newly surfaced video from a deadly Memorial Day weekend shooting at Fort Hood’s Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) appears to show military police officers returning fire during a chaotic confrontation that left a 17-year-old high school senior dead and multiple others wounded. Army criminal investigators are now working to determine exactly what happened in the moments before shots were fired.

The incident occurred Saturday night at BLORA, a popular recreation area managed by Fort Hood’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program that is accessible to the public and located outside the installation’s main cantonment area.

According to Fort Hood officials, military police first received reports around 7 p.m. of disorderly conduct involving vehicles bypassing entry controls as well as complaints involving alcohol, drugs, and minors. Military police patrols were dispatched to investigate and restore order.

At approximately 9:04 p.m., responding military police officers reported shots fired while attempting to break up a fight. Army officials say the officers returned fire during the encounter as additional units responded to secure the area and assist victims.

Video posted to social media and widely shared online shows a large crowd gathered near a parking area as a fight unfolds. Moments later, gunshots erupt and people scatter in multiple directions. In the footage, a military police officer can be seen running toward individuals fleeing the area before firing several rounds. The video has generated significant discussion online as viewers attempt to determine who was armed and what prompted the officers’ use of force. Investigators have not publicly released body-camera footage or provided a detailed account of the sequence of events.

Family members have since identified the deceased victim as 17-year-old Mia Griffin, a Harker Heights High School senior who was scheduled to graduate this week and would have turned 18 on May 27. Killeen Independent School District described the loss as devastating for classmates, friends, and staff members.

Another victim, 21-year-old Kaden Johnson, survived after being shot twice and undergoing emergency surgery. His mother told local media that he suffered two gunshot wounds and was airlifted for treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition.

Fort Hood officials confirmed that one civilian died from injuries sustained during the incident, another civilian was transported to a hospital for treatment, and a service member received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Two individuals were detained for questioning, though Army officials have not announced any arrests or criminal charges.

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation and continues to interview witnesses and involved personnel. Officials have not publicly stated who fired the initial shots, whether multiple shooters were involved, or whether the fatal round that struck Griffin came from a civilian firearm or military police weapon.

The incident has also renewed scrutiny of security at BLORA, which has long served as a recreational destination for both military families and local civilians. Following the shooting, Fort Hood’s MWR program announced that access to the recreation area would be restricted to Department of War identification card holders until further notice.

For now, the viral footage provides only a partial glimpse into a rapidly evolving situation. The central questions investigators must answer remain unresolved: who started the gunfire, who was armed, and whether the military police response complied with Army policy.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact Army CID through its tip line or online reporting system.
