“Put the baby down”: Records reveal Fort Hood Soldier allegedly told pregnant woman before assaulting her

Earlier this month, The Salty Soldier reported that Fort Hood soldier Specialist Lamontavious Keshon Cradic had been arrested and charged in Bell County with assault of a pregnant person and unlawful restraint.

Now, court documents obtained by The Salty Soldier provide new details about what investigators allege occurred during the April 27 incident, including allegations that Cradic told a pregnant woman to “put the baby down” moments before an alleged assault.

According to an arrest affidavit filed in Bell County, Killeen police responded to a reported domestic violence call at a residence on Harriet Tubman Avenue. When officers arrived, they announced themselves and repeatedly attempted to make contact with the occupants but were initially unable to get anyone to answer the door despite hearing voices inside.

The affidavit states officers eventually made contact with a woman who investigators identified as being in a dating relationship with Cradic. According to the affidavit, the woman told investigators that Cradic had come home late the previous night and was highly intoxicated before going to sleep.

The woman told investigators that she attempted to wake Cradic the following morning and later began a FaceTime call with her mother. According to the affidavit, Cradic entered the room during the call and accused her of making his phone inoperable.

The affidavit states Cradic then told the woman to “put the baby down.” The woman told investigators that, based on past incidents, she interpreted the statement to mean he intended to hit her and complied. According to the affidavit, Cradic then grabbed her phone and threw it to the ground, breaking it, although the FaceTime call remained active.

The woman later told investigators that Cradic struck her in the face, though she was uncertain how many times she had been hit.

According to the affidavit, responding officers observed the woman’s hair in disarray, bruising and abrasions around her left eye, swelling and bleeding to her lip, blood on her right hand, and a stretched and torn shirt with what appeared to be fresh blood stains.

The affidavit also indicates that a juvenile child was present inside the residence during the incident. Officers wrote that a child was secured during a safety sweep of the home after Cradic was detained.

According to court records, the woman’s mother remained connected to the active FaceTime call during much of the incident. Investigators wrote that she reported hearing the woman cry out and hearing statements including “he hurt me” and “he broke my phone” while the call was still active.

The affidavit further states that the woman’s mother reported hearing what she believed was Cradic physically restraining the woman and preventing her from coming to the door while officers were outside attempting to make contact.

Investigators also reported that two additional individuals who were participating in the video call corroborated hearing an altercation involving the phone that ultimately resulted in it being damaged. A Killeen police investigator later confirmed the phone had been physically damaged, according to the affidavit.

Court records state the woman was approximately six months pregnant at the time of the alleged assault. According to the affidavit, she showed responding officers a recent ultrasound and reported that she and Cradic had attended prenatal appointments together. Investigators cited that information in concluding Cradic was aware of the pregnancy at the time of the alleged assault.

Additional court documents obtained by The Salty Soldier provide context for the unlawful restraint charge. According to a probable cause affidavit, officers were told Cradic repeatedly pushed the woman back into a bedroom and prevented her from leaving to speak with responding officers.

Fort Hood officials previously confirmed Cradic’s military status in a statement provided to The Salty Soldier.

“Fort Hood officials can confirm that a Fort Hood soldier was arrested. Spc. Lamontavious Keyshon Cradic is a transportation management coordinator currently assigned to the 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command at Fort Hood. His time of active service is 5 years 2 months. Fort Hood is fully cooperating with local law enforcement.”

Bell County inmate records reviewed by The Salty Soldier show Cradic remained in custody as of May 29 on charges of assault of a pregnant person and unlawful restraint.

The felony case remains in the pre-indictment stage, according to Bell County court records.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations contained in court filings are accusations by investigators and prosecutors. Cradic is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
