Massachusetts SWAT Team takes armed security guard into custody after hours-long standoff at Army research installation

An armed security guard working at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon following an hours-long standoff that prompted a shelter-in-place order and a large-scale response from local and state law enforcement, including the Massachusetts State Police SWAT Team.

Authorities say the incident unfolded around 9:15 a.m. after officers responded to reports of a possibly distressed individual at the installation, commonly known as “Natick Labs,” located on General Greene Avenue in Natick, Massachusetts.

According to James Hicks, chief of the Natick Police Department, the individual involved was an on-duty armed security officer assigned to the base.

“This person that we were looking for was an on-duty security officer for the base,” Hicks told reporters during a press conference. “The officers were working to talk with him, to discuss with him what was going on. He fled the officers into an area of the base, where he was able to be contained.”

Video from the scene showed heavily armed SWAT personnel and numerous law enforcement vehicles positioned outside one of the facility entrances while negotiators worked to communicate with the man.

Officials later clarified the guard never threatened anyone other than himself.

“At no point did he threaten anyone other than himself,” Hicks said. “It was clear he was in distress at this time.”

The standoff lasted for several hours before the man ultimately surrendered peacefully shortly after noon. He was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The situation triggered a shelter-in-place order across the installation. In a Facebook post published at approximately 10:42 a.m., installation officials warned personnel:

“THIS IS NOT A DRILL! A shelter-in-place order is now in effect for our installation, effective immediately.”

Out of caution, nearby schools including Wilson Middle School and Bennett-Hemenway Elementary School were temporarily placed into secure hold status while the incident unfolded.

Melissa Spash, superintendent of Natick Public Schools, later confirmed the threat had been resolved and normal school operations resumed.

The U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center issued a statement thanking responding agencies, including Natick police, fire personnel, and the Massachusetts State Police SWAT Team, for their handling of what officials described as a “delicate situation.”

“We extend our thoughts and support to the individual at the center of today’s incident and wish him well as he receives the care he needs,” the installation’s public affairs office stated.

Officials also said counseling and support services would be made available to employees affected by the incident.

The Natick Soldier Systems Center is one of the Army’s premier research and development hubs and serves as home to the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, often referred to as DEVCOM Soldier Center.

The installation plays a major role in developing and testing equipment used by American service members worldwide, including combat uniforms, load-bearing equipment, Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs), shelters, cold-weather systems, and airborne delivery systems.

Located roughly 20 miles west of Boston, the facility supports a workforce of active-duty personnel, federal civilians, contractors, and military retirees. The broader installation reportedly serves more than 6,000 retirees and employs nearly 2,000 personnel across various military and civilian functions.

Originally established in the 1950s, the Natick research campus has long been associated with advancing soldier survivability and sustainment programs for the U.S. military.

Tuesday’s incident highlights the growing concern surrounding mental health struggles among armed security personnel, veterans, and military-affiliated employees working in high-stress environments. While authorities emphasized there was never an active shooter situation, the large law enforcement response underscored the seriousness of an armed and emotionally distressed individual inside a sensitive military installation.

As of Tuesday evening, officials had not publicly identified the security guard involved.
