Marine killed during mishap at Camp Pendleton is identified

A young Marine who died during a tactical vehicle mishap at Camp Pendleton this week has been identified as 21-year-old Private First Class Tanner F. Rubio, military officials announced Thursday.

Rubio, an infantry rifleman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, died Wednesday afternoon when a tactical vehicle malfunctioned during routine training at approximately 1:45 p.m. The Marine Corps said the cause of the mishap remains under investigation and no additional details have been released.

Major General Thomas Savage, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, said the loss is being felt across the formation.

“The tragic loss of Pfc. Rubio is one felt across the 1st Marine Division,” Savage said. “He will be sorely missed, but his honorable service to his country will not be forgotten. All of us at the Blue Diamond will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Rubio, a native of Dixon, California enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2025. According to service records, he completed infantry training earlier this year and had been in the Corps for less than 12 months.

A Facebook post from his father, shared before Rubio left for boot camp, suggests his death occurred just weeks shy of his 22nd birthday.

“Happy 21st Birthday to my boy Tanner,” his father wrote on December 28th of last year. “He leaves Jan. 13 for Marine boot camp. We couldn’t be more proud. I love you, buddy.”

Rubio was serving under I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), the Corps’ West Coast–based air-ground task force responsible for crisis response, forward presence, and major combat operations worldwide.

Camp Pendleton—one of the Marine Corps’ largest training installations—has seen multiple training deaths in recent years.

  • In October 2025, a helicopter pilot assigned to the base died during flight operations near the California-Arizona border.
  • In August 2023, Lance Cpl. Joseph D. Whaley died during a live-fire exercise after a negligent discharge, one of five Marine training deaths that month.
  • In December 2023, Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski was killed when an amphibious combat vehicle rolled over, injuring 14 Marines.
  • In April 2024, Cpl. Miguel A. Maya died during an “aviation ground mishap” at the installation.

Training at Pendleton routinely involves large-scale, complex exercises integrating air, sea, and ground elements—operations that carry inherent risks even under controlled conditions.

The Marine Corps has not released further details about the tactical vehicle involved or the events leading up to the mishap. No other injuries have been reported.
