Police dash cam footage of Army specialist taking his own life is released

For the first time, the City of Killeen, Texas, has released dash cam video from the night the man accused of killing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen took his life.

The Salty Soldier obtained this footage, shedding new light on the final moments of a man whose actions forever changed the U.S. military.

In the early hours of July 1, 2020, police closed in on Specialist Aaron Robinson, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Spc. Vanessa Guillen. Robinson fled military custody and was located by officers in Killeen near East Rancier Avenue. As police approached, Robinson drew a pistol and shot himself in the head.

The newly released dash cam footage begins moments after the gunshot. Officer Frost with the Killeen Police Department pulls up to the scene, where one of Robinson’s legs can be seen collapsing to the ground. Officers move in to secure his weapon, check for a pulse, and cordon off the area as the reality of what just occurred sinks in.

Robinson’s girlfriend, Cecily Aguilar, remains the only living person held accountable for Guillen’s death. In August 2023, Aguilar was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in Waco, Texas—the maximum sentence possible.

Aguilar admitted to helping Robinson dismember and dispose of Guillen’s body near the Leon River, after Robinson bludgeoned her to death with a hammer in a Fort Hood armory.

“Our hope is that today’s sentence brings a sense of relief and justice to the Guillen family,” said Jaime Esparza, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas. “Ms. Aguilar’s actions were indefensible.”

Vanessa Guillen was a 20-year-old Army specialist from Houston who went missing in April 2020. Her remains were discovered two months later. According to Texas DPS documents filed in federal court, Robinson murdered Guillen after she saw a photo of Aguilar on his phone—a violation of the Army’s fraternization rules, since Aguilar was still married to another soldier.

When confronted, Robinson panicked, struck Guillen with a hammer, and later enlisted Aguilar’s help to destroy the evidence. Aguilar admitted to burning and dismembering Guillen’s remains and encasing them in concrete.

Authorities later confirmed that blood was found in the armory room—but only after Guillen’s body had been discovered and two months after her disappearance.

Robinson’s escape from Army custody remains one of the most glaring failures in the case. He was under surveillance when he managed to elude investigators and flee the base. Hours later, he ended his life before being brought to justice.

Further investigation revealed chilling details: Robinson reportedly kept a “hit list”, played games involving a firearm with fellow soldiers, and exhibited erratic behavior before Guillen’s death.

Even more troubling, Aguilar’s estranged husband, Keon Aguilar, told his superiors that Robinson had killed Guillen before her remains were found. Despite that warning, action wasn’t taken until after Robinson’s suicide.

After Robinson’s death, Aguilar helped authorities locate Guillen’s remains. When asked what she wanted to say to Guillen’s family, she replied:

“That I’m sorry. Sorry I didn’t speak up. Sorry they lost their daughter too soon.”

Guillen’s murder ignited a nationwide movement that forced the U.S. Army to confront its culture of sexual harassment and command negligence.

An Army investigation later confirmed that Guillen had been sexually harassed by a supervisor and that leaders failed to act. Her family’s campaign led to sweeping reforms in how the military handles sexual assault and harassment cases.

Attorney Natalie Khawam, who represents the Guillen family, said after Aguilar’s sentencing:

“It was a long, tough road, but we can finally celebrate justice for Vanessa.”
