Initial Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Cushman was previously arrested on July 15, 2025, after authorities received a CyberTipline report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). A search warrant was executed at his home in Graniteville, where investigators say they found multiple files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on his devices.

In that case, Cushman was charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in the third degree. The material reportedly included images of boys aged 7 to 13 and a girl of similar age.

The investigation is being led by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, the Burnettown Police Department, and the South Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Army Confirms Active Duty Status

Following his initial arrest, a spokesperson for the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade confirmed that Cushman was on active duty, assigned to the 11th Cyber Battalion, U.S. Army Cyber Command, at Fort Gordon.

The Army released a statement saying:

“Capt. Sean Cushman is an active-duty soldier currently assigned to the 11th Cyber Battalion, U.S. Army Cyber Command. Aiken County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cushman on 15 July 2025 and is conducting the investigation. We refer any further inquiries to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. The U.S. Army remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and integrity. Allegations of misconduct are taken seriously, and the Army will fully support the appropriate authorities in their investigation.”

Cushman was commissioned as a second lieutenant in May 2018 through the Army ROTC program at California University of Pennsylvania. According to his publicly available social media, he resides in Graniteville and is married.
