A Fort Wainwright soldier is behind bars and facing a first-degree murder charge after a deadly shooting in Fairbanks, Alaska that left one man dead and sent shockwaves through the military and civilian communities alike.
24-year-old Adayus Robertson, an active-duty soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright, was arrested Sunday and charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of Joseph Casas, 37. According to the Fairbanks Police Department (FPD), Casas was found Friday morning with a gunshot wound to the head in an apartment on the 1100 block of 27th Avenue.

Emergency services rushed Casas to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Robertson, who was already on conditions of release in two active felony cases and wearing an ankle monitor, was tracked via GPS data provided by the Department of Corrections. The data placed him at the scene of the homicide—and then walking away.
According to a press release from FPD, officers found Robertson on Sunday near the Big Dipper Ice Arena. He was carrying a handgun magazine at the time. Shortly after, investigators recovered a firearm dumped in a nearby dumpster, believed to be the murder weapon.
Inside the apartment, witnesses confirmed Robertson and Casas were in the same room when the shot was fired. The two men were reportedly known to each other.
Now, Robertson is staring down a $2.5 million bail and a list of serious charges:
- Murder in the First Degree
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Two Counts of Violating Conditions of Release
At the time of the killing, Robertson was already entangled in two other criminal cases:
- Case No. 4FA-25-00531CR – Felony Assault in the Second and Third Degree
- Case No. 4FA-25-00595CR – Escape in the Third Degree and Violating Conditions of Release
According to his Facebook profile, Casas was born and raised in Odessa, Texas, before relocating to Alaska. He owned and operated Silver Stone Construction and Remodel, first in Texas and later in Alaska.
The case is being investigated in cooperation with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, alongside local and state law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Fairbanks Police Department at fpdinvestigations@fairbanks.us or (907) 450-6500.
