Military police officer convicted for what he did to a child

Fort Campbell, KY – A U.S. Army soldier assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell has been convicted in a general court-martial on multiple counts of sexual assault involving a minor.

PFC Tyler C. Barrett, formerly of the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, was sentenced on January 30, 2025, to 45 months of confinement and a Bad Conduct Discharge.

Barrett, who enlisted in the Army in July 2019, was charged under Article 120b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) for engaging in sexual acts with a minor between December 2020 and May 2021 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

The specifications outlined repeated instances of sexual assault against a child between the ages of 12 and 16, including penetration and inappropriate touching.

The charge sheet detailed that Barrett committed multiple sexual acts with the minor victim, including vaginal and oral penetration.

Additionally, Barrett was accused of exposing the victim to pornographic material, an offense categorized as indecent conduct under military law.

The court-martial process for Barrett was extensive, beginning with an arraignment on February 15, 2024. Throughout 2024, multiple Article 39a motion hearings took place, where Barrett initially pleaded not guilty and requested an enlisted panel for trial.

However, as proceedings continued, Barrett ultimately changed his plea to guilty before a military judge. The trial was presided over by Judge LTC Daniel L. Mazzone in the 3rd Judicial Circuit at Fort Campbell. The prosecution was led by CPT Thomas Evans and CPT John R. Lystash, while Barrett’s defense team consisted of civilian attorney James Phillips and CPT Katherine A. Evangelista.

After Barrett’s guilty plea, the military judge sentenced him to 45 months in confinement, a reduction in rank from Private First Class (E-3) to Private (E-1), and a Bad Conduct Discharge. Under the plea agreement, Barrett’s sentence was capped at a maximum of 45 months, with no fines or forfeitures imposed.

Additionally, Barrett was required to register as a sex offender under federal law.

The sentencing decision also included mandatory DNA processing and an assignment consideration code designation, indicating the severity of the offenses and the restrictions placed on Barrett’s future military classification.

Barrett’s conviction and sentencing reinforce the U.S. Army’s strict policies against sexual offenses, particularly those involving minors. His Bad Conduct Discharge will result in the loss of military benefits, and his criminal record will have long-term consequences beyond his military service.
