US Army master sergeant dies suddenly after retiring from the Army

A U.S. Army soldier has tragically died of an unknown cause not long into her retirement from the National Guard.

Master Sergeant Sherry Ann Meyer, 54, of Grimes, Iowa, passed away “suddenly” at her home on January 30, 2025.

While no official cause has been publicly released, her sudden death has shocked her loved ones and those who served with her.

Born on December 18, 1970, in Des Moines, Iowa, Sherry was raised by her loving parents, Ronald J. and Johanna Meyer. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1989 and immediately enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned over three decades.

She finished her military service after 33 years and retired in 2023.

Her awards included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (three awards), Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (eight awards). She also received the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, among others.

During her tenure, Sherry served with honor in Germany and Kosovo, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication. In 2021, she was the noncommissioned officer in charge of the S6 communications section at Camp Bondsteel, Regional Command-East, Kosovo Force, while assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Iowa Army National Guard.

During that time she was chosen to speak in an Army-produced video for Women’s History Month.

Her final role before retiring in 2023 was as a Human Resource Specialist, where she continued to serve her fellow soldiers with distinction.

As a member of the National Guard, Sherry maintained a civilian career while serving in the military. She worked as an Employee Benefits Specialist and later as a Human Resources Generalist at Wesley on Grand.

According top her obituary, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ian Joseph Warnock, in 2013, and her father, Ronald, in 2020.

She is survived by her mother, Johanna Meyer, her daughter, Marika Meyer, and her granddaughter, Memphis Gayle. Additionally, she leaves behind her chosen sister, Karen McKibben, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will cherish her memory.

A full military funeral was held on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
