Soldier killed during helicopter crash is identified

One of the soldiers who died in the tragic collision between an Army helicopter and an American Eagle flight traveling from Kansas to Washington, D.C. has been identified.

The crash, which occurred Wednesday night near Reagan National Airport, resulted in the deaths of all 67 people aboard the two aircraft, officials confirmed Thursday.

Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Eaves, one of three soldiers on the Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, was killed in the crash.

Eaves was originally from Mississippi.

His wife, Carrie Eaves, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, asking for prayers for their family and for all those affected by the tragedy. “We ask that you pray for our family and friends and for all the other families that are suffering today,” she wrote.

In a statement, Eaves’ family expressed their sorrow, remembering him as a “kind, loving, fun-loving, and patriotic man.”

They described him as a devoted husband and father who would have done anything for his family.

“Andrew was a great son, and loved his mom and brother dearly. He was an absolute joy to be around, lighting up every room he entered. He was always the life of the party and a true all-American hero. He will be deeply missed by anyone lucky enough to have known him.”

The Army confirmed that the UH-60 Black Hawk was from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, based at Davison Army Airfield, Fort Belvoir, and was conducting a routine training flight at the time of the crash.

“Our deepest condolences go out to all the families and friends impacted by this tragedy,” said Maj. Gen. Trevor J. Bredenkamp, commander of the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region/U.S. Army Military District of Washington. “Our top priority is to assist in the recovery efforts and fully cooperate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other investigative agencies to determine the cause of this devastating incident.”
