The FBI and Department of Defense have released additional details about Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man accused of killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens during New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Alethea Duncan addressed Jabbar’s background, confirming statements he made in a YouTube video four years ago.
“What I can tell you is that the individual was an Army veteran,” Duncan said. “We believe he received an honorable discharge, but we are still working to confirm all the details.”
According to Army records, Jabbar served as a Human Resource Specialist and Information Technology (IT) Specialist from March 2007 to January 2015. After leaving active duty, he joined the Army Reserves as an IT Specialist, serving from January 2015 to July 2020. His military service included a deployment to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.
The highest rank he achieved during his time in service was the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Jabbar earned several awards during his military career, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign star, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Parachutist Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge.
Before his Army service, Jabbar briefly enlisted in the Navy. According to a Navy spokesperson, “Shamsuddin Bahar Jabbar enlisted on August 12, 2004, in Navy Recruiting District Houston but was discharged from the Delayed Entry Program one month later on September 13, 2004. He did not attend Recruit Training Command.”
The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m. in a crowded area filled with New Year’s revelers. Law enforcement officials reported that Jabbar’s rented Ford EV pickup truck was carrying firearms, pipe bombs, and an ISIS flag attached to the vehicle’s trailer hitch.
While the FBI has not confirmed any direct claim of responsibility from ISIS, investigators are working to determine whether Jabbar acted alone or with accomplices. “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,” Duncan stated. She also confirmed that an improvised explosive device found at the scene is being analyzed for further threats.
Jabbar’s criminal record includes two minor offenses before his military service: a 2002 misdemeanor theft charge in Katy, Texas, and a 2005 charge for driving with an invalid license.
Reporters from the New York Post visited his home in Texas and found he was living in a run-down trailer park where he kept sheep and goats in the yard.
His neighbors, primarily immigrants, refused to speak to reporters except for one woman who said she only spoke Urdu, Pakistan’s national language.
The Post also noted his trailer is in walking distance of Masjid Bilal, a local mosque.
