Early details of the investigation into the death of a soldier killed on post at Fort Eisenhower, formerly known as Fort Gordon, suggest the incident stemmed from a love triangle.

U.S. Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn., was killed during a shooting that occurred on Dec. 14 in an on-post residence.

According to officials, Sgt. Stewart was a 2019 Army enlistee who served on active duty as a Human Resource Specialist. In 2023, he transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserve and became a member of the 400th Military Police Brigade, Fort Meade, Md., according to a press release issued by Fort Eisenhower on Monday, Dec. 16.

National Guard soldier Natravien Landry, 25, of Abbeville, Louisiana, has been charged with one count of murder in connection with the shooting, according to Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Landry is currently assigned to the 1148th Transportation Company at Fort Eisenhower.

Gate records show that Landry entered Fort Eisenhower around 4:45 a.m. on Saturday morning, reported for drill duty, and was released at 7 a.m., investigators said. Instead of returning to duty after his break, Landry allegedly visited the on-post residence of a woman with whom he shares a child. Court documents indicate that Sgt. Stewart was present at the residence, and investigators believe this led to the fatal confrontation.

The woman told investigators she was awakened by a commotion in her bedroom and saw Landry standing near the room’s entrance. She approached Landry to talk, but when she turned away, she heard a gunshot from his direction. She stated that Landry was jealous of her relationship with Sgt. Stewart, whom he discovered in bed with her that morning.

Landry fled the scene but was apprehended three hours later during a traffic stop on I-85 south of Atlanta by the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies reportedly recovered a 9mm pistol during the stop. Landry was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and transported to the Lincoln County Jail, where he remains pending further court proceedings.

“Our Fort Eisenhower team suffered a tragedy this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with a grieving family. I remain focused on supporting anybody impacted – directly or indirectly – by this incident,” said Maj. Gen. Ryan Janovic, Commanding General of the Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Eisenhower. “I commend the swift action of our entire team and our community partners, who together are committed to safety, security, and care for those in pain.”

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation into the incident.
