Military Police soldier held in civilian jail after sexual assault conviction involving fellow soldier

A Fort Bragg military police soldier is currently being held in a North Carolina detention facility after pleading guilty to a sexual assault involving another soldier, according to military records.

Private First Class Austin J. Norris, 22, assigned to the 65th Military Police Company under the 503rd Military Police Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, was convicted March 6, 2026, at a general court-martial at Fort Bragg.

According to the charge sheet, obtained by The Salty Soldier, the incident occurred on or about July 2, 2025, at or near Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Court records state Norris engaged in a sexual act with another Private First Class while she was asleep.

Prosecutors alleged the victim was incapable of consenting at the time and that Norris knew or reasonably should have known she was asleep.

The charge sheet initially included two specifications stemming from the same date and incident. Norris ultimately pleaded guilty to one specification of abusive sexual contact under Article 120 as part of a plea agreement.

He was sentenced to 12 months confinement and a bad-conduct discharge.

Norris entered the Army on September 23, 2024, and had been in service for less than a year at the time of the offense.

Following sentencing, Norris was taken into custody and transferred to the Harnett County Detention Center, where he is currently being held pending transfer to a military or federal confinement facility.

Intake records show he was booked into the facility on March 6, 2026 — the same day as his court-martial — indicating he was placed into confinement immediately after sentencing.

The records also confirm Norris’s assignment to a military police unit, a role responsible for enforcing law and maintaining discipline within the ranks.

He remains in custody as the Army processes his transfer to a long-term confinement facility.
