U.S. Military death toll rises to six as Pentagon warns more casualties are likely

As major combat operations continue under Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military death toll has climbed to six in the first three days of war with Iran.

According to United States Central Command, the remains of two previously unaccounted-for American service members were recovered from a facility struck during Iran’s initial missile attacks in the region. Their recovery brought the total number of U.S. troops killed in action to six as of 4 p.m. Eastern on March 2.

The identities of the fallen are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Strike on Kuwait Base Sparked Initial Casualties

CENTCOM previously confirmed that three U.S. service members were killed Sunday following an Iranian strike on a base housing American forces in Kuwait. Five others were reported seriously wounded. On Monday morning, officials announced that one of the wounded had succumbed to injuries, raising the total to four at the time.

Hours later, the recovery of two additional service members from a damaged facility pushed the confirmed death toll to six.

Major combat operations remain ongoing across the region.

“War Is Hell” — Pentagon Signals More Losses Likely

Speaking at a Pentagon press conference Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the growing casualty numbers.

“War is hell and always will be,” Hegseth said. “A grateful nation honors the four Americans we have lost thus far.”

Shortly afterward, confirmation of two additional recovered service members revised that number to six.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine warned that further losses should be expected as operations intensify.

The administration has increasingly signaled that additional casualties are likely as Iran continues retaliatory missile and drone strikes across the Gulf region.

Regional Escalation Expands

Iran’s retaliatory campaign has included missile and drone launches toward U.S. and allied positions in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Regional governments have reported intercepting ballistic missiles and drones in their airspace, while explosions were heard over Doha and other Gulf capitals.

The war began after joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeted senior Iranian leadership and military infrastructure. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during the opening phase of the assault, along with several top officials, triggering immediate retaliation across the region.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Monday that Washington was aware Israel was preparing to strike Iran and assessed that American forces in the region would likely be targeted in response.

“We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action,” Rubio said. “If we didn’t pre-emptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties.”

President Donald Trump has indicated that operations against Iran could last approximately four weeks.

Americans Urged to Leave Region

The State Department has urged American citizens across more than a dozen Middle Eastern nations to depart immediately using commercial transportation, citing serious safety risks as the conflict expands.

With six U.S. service members now confirmed killed and combat operations intensifying, the war has already become the deadliest U.S. military engagement in the region in years — and senior leaders are openly warning that the toll may rise.
