Former Navy SEAL David Goggins is back serving in Special Operations at 51 years old

Former Navy SEAL and endurance athlete David Goggins is back in uniform and currently serving in Air Force Special Warfare, according to confirmation provided to The Salty Soldier.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed that Goggins is assigned as a Master Sergeant to the U.S. Air Force Special Warfare Training Wing at Joint Base San Antonio–Lackland.

“We can confirm Air Force Master Sergeant David Goggins is currently assigned to the Special Warfare Training Wing. In accordance with policy, we do not discuss the status, progression, or details of current trainees,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The confirmation marks an unexpected return to military service for the 51-year-old former special operations veteran, who became widely known in recent years for his extreme endurance feats and bestselling books focused on mental toughness.

A rare return to special operations service

While prior-service members occasionally transfer between branches, it is uncommon for someone with Goggins’ public profile to reenter military service after achieving national recognition outside the armed forces.

Goggins previously served as a Navy SEAL and earlier in his career was an Air Force Tactical Air Control Party airman. His military career has been widely cited as the foundation of the discipline and mindset he promotes in his writing and speaking.

The Air Force did not provide details on Goggins’ specific duties or training status within the Special Warfare Training Wing.

“In accordance with policy, we do not discuss the status, progression, or details of current trainees,” the spokesperson said.

Online speculation sparked questions

Discussion about Goggins’ presence at the Special Warfare training installation began circulating online earlier this week after claims surfaced suggesting the former SEAL had entered an Air Force Special Warfare training pipeline.

The rumors prompted intense debate among service members and veterans, particularly regarding how a high-profile figure could enter the pipeline and what waivers or administrative steps might be required.

The Air Force confirmation establishes that Goggins is currently assigned to the Special Warfare Training Wing, though officials declined to comment on any additional details about his status.

Cross-service operators have joined Air Force Special Warfare before

In its statement, the Air Force emphasized that prior-service special operators from other branches have historically transferred into Air Force Special Warfare units.

“Given MSgt Goggins’ background, it’s worth noting that the Air Force has welcomed special operators from other services to cross train into Special Warfare for decades,” the spokesperson said.

“Airmen entering the pipeline from sister services must meet the same standards and complete the same rigorous training as all other candidates. We value the experience gained from former Special Forces, Rangers, Marine Special Operations and SEALS that have joined our Air Force Special Warfare units once they have completed their training.”

Air Force Special Warfare includes several elite career fields responsible for high-risk missions across the globe, including Pararescue, Combat Control, Special Reconnaissance, and Tactical Air Control Party.

Training pipelines for these specialties are widely regarded as some of the most physically and mentally demanding programs in the Department of War.

What remains unclear

While the Air Force confirmed Goggins’ assignment to the Special Warfare Training Wing, officials declined to comment on several questions raised by the online discussion.

The service did not say:

• Whether Goggins is currently participating in a specific Special Warfare training pipeline
• What role he is serving in within the training wing
• Whether any waivers were required for his assignment
• What administrative pathway allowed his return to service

For now, one fact is confirmed: at 51 years old, David Goggins is once again serving inside a U.S. military special operations training organization.
