U.S. Servicemember detained after drunken rampage at bar in South Korea

A U.S. servicemember in his 20s was detained by South Korean police after allegedly causing extensive damage inside a bar near a U.S. military installation in Pyeongtaek during the early morning hours of February 25.

According to South Korean broadcaster YTN, the incident occurred shortly before dawn at a bar located near a U.S. base in Pyeongtaek, a city that hosts the large American installation known as Camp Humphreys.

Security footage cited in local reports shows the man lying outside the establishment before employees attempted to help him up. After staff left the area, the individual allegedly returned to the closed bar and began smashing the glass door and windows with a chair.

Once inside, the suspect reportedly began throwing bottles from the display shelves and damaging equipment behind the counter. Authorities said more than 100 bottles of liquor and other fixtures were destroyed during the incident. No injuries were reported.

Police responding to the scene arrested the servicemember on suspicion of property damage. However, he was soon transferred to U.S. military custody in accordance with the U.S.–South Korea Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which governs the legal status of American troops stationed in South Korea.

Under the agreement, South Korean authorities generally retain investigative and trial jurisdiction in many cases involving U.S. personnel. However, custody of the servicemember typically remains with U.S. forces prior to indictment unless the alleged crime involves a serious offense such as murder.

Police believe the servicemember was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and plan to summon him for questioning with a U.S. military representative present to determine the exact circumstances and motive behind the damage.

Pyeongtaek is home to Camp Humphreys, the largest U.S. military installation overseas and headquarters for U.S. Forces Korea. The area surrounding the base includes a concentration of bars and nightlife venues frequented by American service members stationed there.

As of publication, there has been no official acknowledgment or public statement from the U.S. military regarding the incident.

The Salty Soldier has submitted a media inquiry to the U.S. Army requesting confirmation of the incident, the servicemember’s unit assignment, and whether any administrative or disciplinary action is being taken. The Army had not responded as of publication.

The investigation remains ongoing.
