Caught on Camera: Soldier records suspected contractor theft in barracks

Military Police at Fort Gordon have launched an investigation after a soldier’s personal security camera allegedly captured a contractor stealing money from a barracks room — and then attempting to disable the camera feed.

The incident, which was first posted to Reddit on July 17, has since sparked outrage among soldiers and veterans, especially as it raises broader concerns about unauthorized access to military housing by civilian contractors.

According to the soldier who shared the footage, members of the unit had been notified that Georgia Power would be entering barracks rooms to complete lighting upgrades. However, the contractors working for Georgia Power were reportedly not escorted by any uniformed personnel — a clear violation of common-sense security protocols.

The viral video shows two men entering a soldier’s room. One appears to discreetly pocket cash from a desk, then notices the camera and makes a clumsy attempt to obstruct or disable it — but not before the alleged theft is clearly recorded.

“Turns out that does not work when you are dealing with slightly more tech-savvy soldiers,” the original poster wrote.

While initial assumptions pointed toward Georgia Power employees, the utility company quickly issued a statement distancing itself from the individuals in the video. Georgia Power clarified that while it is overseeing the lighting project at Fort Gordon, the two men in question were subcontractors hired by a third-party vendor, E. Sam Jones Electric Company.

In a statement to WRDW/WAGT, Georgia Power said:

“We take this very seriously and appreciate the soldiers involved bringing it to our attention. We expect anyone working on our behalf on this project to follow base guidelines and act ethically and in compliance with all laws.”

Georgia Power confirmed the two subcontractors have since been removed from the project site.

E. Sam Jones, the contracting company responsible for the workers, also issued a statement saying they are treating the matter with “the utmost seriousness” and are fully cooperating with the investigation.

Fort Gordon officials acknowledged the incident and stated that it is under formal investigation by Military Police.

“We appreciate early and continued cooperation from the leadership of Georgia Power,” a Fort Gordon public affairs officer said. “Together we are committed to keeping Soldiers ready, focused, and safe.”

The incident has reignited concerns about barracks security and raised questions about whether any other soldiers may have had their property stolen or privacy violated.

“There is no telling if they’ve stolen from other people, both on post and off post too,” the Reddit post warned.

What especially troubled many soldiers was the claim that these civilian workers had zero uniformed escort while accessing private barracks rooms. Even worse, some soldiers allegedly were told they couldn’t enter their own rooms while the contractors were inside.

“Stealing from soldiers is particularly disgraceful,” the soldier wrote. “There should never be a civilian — ESPECIALLY one who is not even DA or DOD — in a soldier’s barracks room without a uniformed escort under ANY circumstance.”

As of now, no criminal charges have been announced. Military Police and Fort Gordon leadership say they are continuing to investigate, while Georgia Power and E. Sam Jones insist they are committed to cooperating fully.
